Dig deep with your kiddos and learn about soil layers together with this edible Dirt Cup activity. Each layer is represented by a sweet surprise from the JOLLY RANCHER “gems” to the TWIZZLERS “wiggly worms.” This is a great taste-safe activity to do in the classroom or on the weekends!
Recipe Directions: Make pudding according to the instructions on the box and chill in the refrigerator until needed. (You can also use pre-made pudding cups, we won't tell.)
Take the 12 chocolate sandwich cookies and twist them in half. Divide the cookies with the cream-side into a separate bowl from the plain-side cookies. (Each one represents a different layer!)
In a food processor, crush the cream-side cookies into a fine crumb and put them back in the bowl. Repeat the process with the plain-side cookies.
Crush JOLLY RANCHER Hard Candies using a food processor or place them in a plastic freezer bag and wrap them in a towel. Using a rolling pin or hammer, carefully crush the candy until the desired size.
Break KIT KAT® Bars into small pieces and crush.
Pull the string of TWIZZLERS PULL ‘N’ PEEL Candy into smaller strings and cut into 2 to 3-inch sections.
Assembly Directions: Place 2 tablespoons of crushed cream side cookies into the bottom of each cup to represent the bedrock.
Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of JOLLY RANCHER pieces over the first layer of cookie crumbs. This represents gemstones and precious metals.
Line the inside of the cups with 4 JOLLY RANCHER Gummies to represent fossils.
Place 1 tablespoon of the plain cookie crumbs on top of the JOLLY RANCHER pieces and around the gummies to represent the subsoil.
Divide the pudding between the cups; about 1/3 cup per cup. This represents the surface.
Sprinkle 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of KIT KAT® crumbs over pudding and 3 to 4 TWIZZLERS “worms” to represent the organic matter.
If using a food processor, sift out any fine candy dust. The dust can be sprinkled on ice cream or added to drinks!
